Youth
Our Space, Safe Place (OSSP)
A social perceptions project that engaged young people
to help raise awareness around the importance of safety
in public places
The project engaged young people from ages 12-25 in a series of art and photography workshops and an online survey to find out what they think of safety in public spaces that are important to them.
More than 500 young people from a range of socially diverse backgrounds
participated in the project by creating art, photography and writing to communicate their opinions of safety – what makes them feel safe or unsafe; what can be done to make these spaces feel safer; and how to develop spaces where young people feel valued and connected to their community.

With the survey revealing one in two feel unsafe in public places, the exhibition journeys through ‘unsafe to safe’ territory and scenarios and the strategies young people use to engage in public life and “not live a life of fear”.
Deborah Costello, CEO of ICCWA said "This project has set the gold standard for youth and social research and we are so proud of the young people involved; their contributions will make a difference”.
