By attending this forum you will learn information about:
· Attitudes towards alcohol related violence at licensed premises;
· Best practice to reduce violence in entertainment precincts;
· Local solutions to alcohol-related problems;
· Improving communication across the different sectors of the community, from planners to property developers to home owners to Local Government Authorities.
In addition, you will have the opportunity to participate in breakout sessions in the second half of the day. These sessions will be prevention-focussed and will enable you to more thoroughly explore how to develop local solutions to community violence and alcohol-related issues.
Who will be speaking?
There will be keynote contributions from:
· Dr Paul Cozens, Senior Research Fellow, Curtin University of Technology – Paul is a specialist in crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED). He has conducted research and applied designing out crime to a range of urban environments including residential environments, railway stations, shopping centres, public access ways, community facilities and city centres.
Paul will discuss environmental criminology and Perth’s night-time economy.
· Gavin Wilson, Senior Planning Policy Officer, City of Casey, Victoria – Gavin has held a position in the office of Victorian Local Government for the past 15 years. In the last 10 he has been employed by the City of Casey as a Senior Planning Policy Officer. His role has focused on developing sustainable solutions towards reducing harms associated with particular sensitive land uses, some of which include alcohol and gambling. Gavin is the former Chair of the Victorian Local Government Alcohol & Other Drugs Forum sponsored by the Municipal Association of Victoria and has participated in many State Government enquiries into reducing alcohol related harms by utilising effective strategic and statutory planning mechanisms. Gavin frequently undertakes research with the Australian Drug Foundation and the Turning Point Alcohol and Drug Centre surrounding cumulative impact and licensed premises density.
Gavin will discuss the impact of planning to avoid the cumulative impact of licensed premises, looking at the various types of liquor license categories and what it means if they cluster or saturate in a particular community area.
· Deborah Costello, Chief Executive Officer, Injury Control Council – Deborah has over 20 years experience working with a range of government, non-government and not-for-profit organisations and has worked across the health, community care and injury prevention sectors gaining experience in areas such as partnership development, community engagement, policy development and analysis, strategic and business planning and program design, management and implementation. Deborah is on the Management Committee of the Australian Safe Communities Foundation Inc and has been appointed as Chair of the Injury Prevention Working Group.
Deborah will discuss the Safer Bars WA project, a training program funded by the WA Government, that aimed to reduce violence and injury in and around bars [for the purpose of this project, 'bar' refers to hotels, bars and nightclubs] in metropolitan Perth by increasing the capacity of staff to respond to problem situations.
