Stay On Your Feet® Week 2012

Stay On Your Feet® Week 2012
9 - 15 September 2012

Stay On Your Feet® Week aims to promote healthy active ageing in WA and raise awareness within the community that falls are preventable and not a consequence of ageing.

Stay On Your Feet® Week 2012 has had another successful year. The Week was launched with an ‘Experience Tai Chi’ event in Alfred Cove on Friday 7 September. More than 200 people attended with the majority taking part in the Tai Chi. A presentation by pharmacist Deidre Criddle informed participants on the Nine Steps To Stay On Your Feet® whilst Falls Specialists offered free balance testing.

It was a great day which increased motivation to prevent falls, with 37% of participants identifying themselves as highly motivated at the start of the day compared to 68% at the end of the morning’s activities.

For the first time a regional launch was also held, with the Tai Chi theme in Kalgoorlie. Over 140 organisations throughout the state, from Christmas Island to Esperance, hosted events during the Week promoting good health and active ageing, with 70 receiving a small grant to assist.

Key messaging was promoted through The West Australian, Radio West, RAC Horizon Magazine and Curtin FM leading up to and during the Week. As a result, an influx of information enquiries have been received through the Stay On Your Feet WA® Falls Resource Information Centre.

2012 Event Overviews

The community groups who received funding in 2012 were asked to complete an event overview to discuss their event, the way they went about promoting it and what they felt were particularly successful parts of their event. You can read ten event overviews below, all of which contain great ideas you can use to host your own event in 2013.
