Falls are a serious issue for people over the age of 65 years in Western Australia.  One in three people over 65 years falls each year.  Falls can have serious consequences on independence and lifestyle.  Falls are not an inevitable part of getting older and can be prevented.

There are 120 hospital presentations at emergency departments for people
aged 65 years and over as a result of falls each week in Western Australia

 

ICCWA has been a key service provider for the Department of Health WA’s, Stay On Your Feet WA®program since 2001.  The Stay On Your Feet WA® Falls Prevention Resources Information Centre has been established by ICCWA with funding from the Department of Health WA.  The Resources Information Centre forms part of the State Falls Prevention Network and provides a single point of access for information and tools on falls prevention.

ICCWA coordinates activities such as:

  • Resource development and dissemination

  • Falls prevention education

  • Stay On Your Feet WA® Week

  • Professional development and training

  • Collaboration and partnership development

  • Awareness raising activities such as community presentations, displays and events

  • Media, marketing and communications

  • Training and information for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Communities

  • Referral to appropriate services

  • Volunteer program coordination
