Challenge accepted social norms and alcohol culture

  • Host alcohol-free events such as barbecues, parties, school fetes, etc.
  • Discuss the role of alcohol with friends, family, coworkers and neighbours
  • Avoid participation in "legend" story telling-any story that features a behaviour that would otherwise be socially unacceptable but is acceptable because the person is intoxicated such as fighting or damaging property
  • Support alcohol-free events such as alternative schoolies celebrations, mocktail holiday parties and activity oriented 21st birthdays

Advocate
Adovcate for change to minimise alcohol-related harm

  • Engage with the media about alcohol
  • Write letter-to-the-editor
  • Ring in to talk-back-radio
  • Create a media release for alcohol-free community events
  • Engage with government at local, state/territory or national levels
  • Join a group such as WACAN or other alcohol and other drug groups

Role Model
Show others your responsible behaviours towards alcohol

  • Have a limit and stick to it
  • Know the guidelines for low-risk alcohol consumption and them
  • Space your drinks
  • Eat when you drink
  • Talk to your children about alcohol often and early with both teenagers and younger children
